PSLF Transfer to MOHELA

Federal Student Aid (FSA) will begin transitioning the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, borrowers, and their loans in stages from FedLoan Servicing to MOHELA starting in early July 2022 into September 2022.

This loan transfer will not impact the existing terms, conditions, interest rates, loan discharge or forgiveness programs, or available repayment plans on the loans. It will also not impact your progress towards PSLF forgiveness. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) Forbearance payment pause and 0% interest rate will still remain active through August 31, 2022.

All PSLF borrowers whose loans have not been forgiven will be transferred to MOHELA. PSLF discharges for borrowers who meet all eligibility requirements will continue to occur during this transfer timeframe. PSLF borrowers whose loans are forgiven during this transfer timeframe will not be transferred.

What to Expect

PSLF borrowers can expect to receive five notices as their accounts are transferred including:

  1. An email from FSA in June with information and expectations about this transfer.
  2. Notice of transfer from FedLoan Servicing
  3. Pre-transfer confirmation email from FSA: Will be sent after the notice of transfer from FedLoan Servicing, but before the transfer occurs.
  4. Welcome letter from MOHELA
  5. Post-transfer confirmation email from FSA: Will be sent approximately 2 weeks after the transfer is complete.

Bank and Bill Paying Service

It's very important to change the contact information from FedLoan Servicing to MOHELA in your bank or bill paying service. You should immediately update the following information to MOHELA:

  • Updated name
  • Payment address
  • New MOHELA Account Number

By not making these updates, the bank or bill paying service will send your payments to the wrong servicer, and there will be a delay in your account being credited. The payment address should be updated to:

PSLF Forms

On May 01, 2022, FSA established a pause on the transfer of borrowers from non-PSLF servicers to the existing PSLF servicer (FedLoan Servicing). Transfers will resume to MOHELA after July 01, 2022. Borrowers with submitted and completed PSLF forms will be transferred to MOHELA from their current servicer. You do not need to resend any form or application.

Forms or applications already processed or pending to be processed, will be forwarded to MOHELA.

Your progress towards PSLF will not be impacted if you have submitted a PSLF form between May 01, 2022, and June 30, 2022, and your account has not yet been transferred.

You are welcome to submit signed and completed PSLF forms at any time. FedLoan Servicing will continue to process PSLF forms and will identify borrowers for transfer to MOHELA. Once transferred to MOHELA, borrowers can create their online accounts with MOHELA and start checking on their progress towards PSLF.

IMPORTANT: Please note, these transfers will be completed incrementally and not all information will be transferred or available immediately on July 01, 2022.

Incomplete or Denied PSLF Form

If your PSLF form is incomplete or denied, FedLoan Servicing will reach out to you with the status of your PSLF form. In such situations, borrowers are encouraged to submit the necessary information to FedLoan Servicing immediately to ensure the form can be processed.

On May 01, 2022, FSA implemented several changes to prepare for the transition of the PSLF Program from FedLoan Servicing to MOHELA. These changes were put into place to minimize the number of borrowers who might otherwise be subjected to multiple servicer transfers. These changes include:

  • Borrowers who are taking advantage of the limited PSLF waiver by consolidating their loans on, must choose MOHELA as their new loan servicer as FedLoan Servicing is no longer an option.
  • Once MOHELA is selected, the borrower’s loans will be consolidated by Aidvantage, another member of the Federal Student Aid’s servicing team.
  • When Aidvantage completes the consolidation, the new loan will be sent to MOHELA for general servicing. If the consolidation is completed before July 01, 2022, MOHELA can provide general servicing of the consolidation loan. After July 01, 2022, borrowers who consolidated for PSLF can work directly with MOHELA regarding any questions about their PSLF status.

Your progress toward PSLF will not be affected if you consolidate your loans between May 01, 2022, and June 30, 2022, and have your new loan go directly to MOHELA. As of July 01, 2022, borrowers who have transferred can work directly with MOHELA for any questions about the PSLF program and the transfer process.

MOHELA can only provide PSLF information (such as payment counts), after a PSLF Form has been processed and payment periods have been assessed. MOHELA will communicate all updates.
